Many years ago, a grocery shopper might use this device to add up the items in their shopping carts, up to $20. I don’t know what they would do about sales tax on some items? Mostly food isn’t taxed, but everybody needs toilet paper?

I found this one in one of our junk drawers, and it works fine, but at today’s prices, it needs another column of digits.
